    New Col-CC Operations Concept and New Challenges

    On 15 January 2014 the Columbus Flight Control Team implemented the New Operations Concept after a short term preparation phase in the second half of 2013. The new setup consists of two 24/7 positions Col- FD and STRATOS support by several 8/5 positions like COSMO and COMET as well as the Eurocom. This new operations concept has been established in short timeframe in parallel to the ongoing crosscertification of the DMS and Systems team members to STRATOS. Due to the short preparation phase the new setup has to be improved and fine-tuned will already in use together with updating the relevant ops products. It is planned to finalize the transition phase by mid of 2014 which will allow providing a first experience of the new setup. In parallel to these big setup changes of the FCT a lot of challenges are waiting for the team. In January 2014 the next on-board software upgrade – Cycle 14 – has been successfully performed. The preparation for the next increment 39/40 is in full swing especially the preparation for the “Blue Dot” mission of the German ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst. During this mission many new payloads will be brought to the ISS and many experiments will be performed in Columbus

    Introduction to Surface Avatar: the First Heterogeneous Robotic Team to be Commanded with Scalable Autonomy from the ISS

    Robotics is vital to the continued development toward Lunar and Martian exploration, in-situ resource utilization, and surface infrastructure construction. Large-scale extra-terrestrial missions will require teams of robots with different, complementary capabilities, together with a powerful, intuitive user interface for effective commanding. We introduce Surface Avatar, the newest ISS-to-Earth telerobotic experiment series, to be conducted in 2022-2024. Spearheaded by DLR, together with ESA, Surface Avatar builds on expertise on commanding robots with different levels of autonomy from our past telerobotic experiments: Kontur-2, Haptics, Interact, SUPVIS Justin, and Analog-1. A team of four heterogeneous robots in a multi-site analog environment at DLR are at the command of a crew member on the ISS. The team has a humanoid robot for dexterous object handling, construction and maintenance; a rover for long traverses and sample acquisition; a quadrupedal robot for scouting and exploring difficult terrains; and a lander with robotic arm for component delivery and sample stowage. The crew's command terminal is multimodal, with an intuitive graphical user interface, 3-DOF joystick, and 7-DOF input device with force-feedback. The autonomy of any robot can be scaled up and down depending on the task and the astronaut's preference: acting as an avatar of the crew in haptically-coupled telepresence, or receiving task-level commands like an intelligent co-worker. Through crew performing collaborative tasks in exploration and construction scenarios, we hope to gain insight into how to optimally command robots in a future space mission.     Development and Implementation of a new Columbus Operations Setup

    After four years of continuous Columbus operations since February 2008 and the end of the Shuttle era in July 2011 the operations concept of ISS and also Columbus has to be partly reshuffled. Despite the last years when tool upgrades and hardware renewals were in the focus of the team now a reorganization of the Flight Control Team itself has to be started. In parallel to the ongoing operations work which has to ensure a running Columbus module with minimum impact, the FCT has developed a new setup of the on-console and off-console team. This is partly driven by a growing efficiency of the FCT due to their experience on console but mainly to ensure the feasibility and affordability of the project during the long-term operations period until at least 2020. The year 2012 is a pure preparation year laying the basis for the changes to come in the years after. The first implementation of the new setup on console is planned for 2013. Nevertheless the new concept will be full established in 2015, only. Due to the reduced resources foreseen in the new concept there will be a lot of influences on the performance of the flight control team and on how operations is done at Col-CC when the new concept is implemented. Nevertheless the necessary tasks of the Col-CC FCT will be performed during transition and after the final implementation of the concept. Besides this big preparation work to be done in 2012 also the normal operations work has been performed with rack tilting, exchange of hardware, a major software upgrade of the Columbus module and support of the payload operations in Columbus. The paper will give an overview of the achievements and highlights of the last year and concentrate major change in the setup of the Columbus FCT which is one of the preparatory tasks for the planned ISS operations until 2020

    One aspect which is predestined to be overlooked in a highly technical environment like space operations is the “man in the loop”, who acts not fully predictable like a computer, but whose actions are partially influenced and affected by completely different, non-technical domains: the psychological or physical constitution of human beings and their interactions within a group. This chapter focuses on factors which minimize errors with potentially severe consequences and which improve the performance of high responsibility teams acting in a complex and dynamic environment. It establishes a link between those factors and operational concepts of spaceflight operations

    System Upgrades prepare Columbus for a new Decade

    ESA intends to support ISS operations for 10 additional years until 2030. To get the European Columbus module ready for the new decade, several new subsystems have already been installed, are momentarily ready to launch or in development like the Mass Memory Units MKII, the Col Ka-Band Unit, Columbus LAN Switches MKII, Columbus Network Monitoring and Administration Unit, Network Attached Storage Unit, General Interface Adapter, New Payload Racks. The main effort lies in the modernization of the data management system. Equipment will be exchanged in favour of newer generations. The network will be enhanced, provided services improved and onboard LAN monitoring, LAN security and switch configuration capability added. The Columbus module is upgraded to pave the way for new commercial payloads and concepts which will fundamentally change the prerequisites and broaden the horizon of microgravity research. The Bioreactor Express concept and the Bartolomeo platform are two prime examples of what awaits the module in these coming years. Additionally, new payloads like EDR MKII and ER-10B are launched and installed. The integration of this large number of new subsystems, payloads and concepts is a major challenge not only for the Flight Control Team but also for the Ground Segment Team, the Engineering Team and the Stowage and Maintenance Team. In parallel to the ongoing standard crew support, e.g. for the Beyond mission with Luca Parmitano, the FCT has to prepare and execute complex high-profile activities like the Cycle 15 software upgrade in January 2020 or the installation and commissioning of the Col Ka-Band unit in the first quarter of 2021. This paper is focusing on the preparation work of the FCT, summarizes the first results of the on board upgrades and provides an outlook on the future activities planned in the course of the Columbus on-board modernisation as well as on synergies towards deep space operations and exploration

    First Experience With Columbus DMS Modernization, COL Ka Operations And IP-Based Communication

    The next chapter in European human spaceflight operations was opened on January 27th, 2021 when the Columbus Ka-Band Unit (COL Ka) was installed outside the Columbus module on the International Space Station (ISS). Only for the second time since European ISS operations have started, flight controllers at Columbus Control Centre (Col-CC) of the German Space Operations Center (GSOC) and across Europe worked hand-in-hand with both EVA and IVA astronauts, guiding COL Ka installation activities and performing successful functional checkouts of the new hardware. This kicked off intense months of commissioning activities of the COL Ka software and hardware, on-board Multi-Purpose Computer and Communication (MPCC) equipment, data relay via the EDRS-A satellite, and ground systems of this new, all Internet Protocol (IP)-based communication infrastructure. All these elements are entirely designed and owned by the European Space Agency (ESA) and its partners. The commissioning activities established for the first time an end-to-end data transfer between COL Ka and Col-CC, via the Interconnection Ground Subnetwork (IGS) from Col-CC to the ground station in Harwell, UK, and the EDRSA satellite. The new operational systems and interfaces between all involved operational teams were put to test. Problems encountered during EVA and commissioning were worked by the flight control team with support of the engineering and safety communities in order to prepare COL Ka for nominal operations. Simultaneously, flight controllers at Col‑CC prepared the deployment of the key element of the Columbus Data Management System (DMS) and Communications (COMMS) on-board infrastructure modernization effort: A new LAN switch (CLSW Mk2) integrates the existing legacy DMS and the new-generation IP-based communication infrastructure into one coherent, state-of-the-art system architecture while respecting modern IT security principles. Due to the invasive nature of this Columbus core hardware upgrade, a considerable part of Col‑CC preparation activities have been spent on preparing for the updated DMS and COMMS software systems. The upgrade to the CLSW Mk2 and associated software eventually allows for easier and leaner, IP-based payload operations with enhanced bandwidth capabilities via MPCC and COL Ka, all while making extensive use of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and software for system operations and end users alike.
